Michigan Lawmakers May Get Tougher on E-Cigarettes

State lawmakers in Lansing may resume efforts this week to toughen regulations on so-called 'electronic cigarettes.

A house committee Tuesday takes up legislation that would redefine 'e-cigarettes' as a 'tobacco product,' but it would not be subject to the state's tobacco tax.

The measure effectively prohibits the sale of the devices to minors. Also under the bill, electronic cigarettes would be required to be in child-resistant containers.

The bill is before the Michigan House Regulatory Affairs Committee on Tuesday.
